It's official: we now have dedicated garden plots in the Village of Carpentersville Community Gardens to use for the Unity Gardens project! 85% of the produce goes to the FISH Food Pantry, with the rest going to volunteers (thank you Boys & Girls Clubs of Dundee Township!).
We're planning to use organic gardening methods like no-till raised beds, companion planting, and organic fertilizers.
This is our first year so we have to remember to stay small even though the natural inclination is to follow every big idea we have for this. We'll plant some staples and maybe a few wild cards, get some herbs mixed in with the vegetable beds along with native prairie flowers and cover crop. Some plants will add nitrogen, some will take it, some attract insects that eat the other pests, some even repel undesirable insects from the garden!
All of them have a function in the web of life and will unfold to their fullest potential if given the right conditions.
